I don't have your configuration available, but from your picture it seems as if there was a problem with the font (digits are slightly wider than the rest). You should try another font.

Thanks hobiwan
I've just ended to try the following combinations:

    serif 16
    sanserif 16
    FreeMono 16
BitStream Vera Sans 16 and 20

and refreshing the page. No alignment appeared. Unfortunately, Ubuntu fonts don't include equally spaced characters, like Courier or Courier New. Thanks again.

See the solution here:

Code:

#
# Source: Puzzle Designer of `The Su Doku Assistant`(v1.9)
#         seed 1615, 21 starting cells, 5 grade of difficulty
#         symmetric grid
#         (max.grade of diff.=6, often not for human minds!)
#
8 . .|. . .|. . 3
. 6 .|. 5 .|. 4 .
. . .|2 . 9|. . .
-----+-----+-----
. . 1|. . .|9 . .
. 2 .|. 4 .|. 6 .
. . 5|. . .|7 . .
-----+-----+-----
. . .|5 . 1|. . .
. 4 .|. 6 .|. 2 .
3 . .|. . .|. . 8
#
#    ----- 1st Tree -----
#    3B3 (alias 3E3)
#     |
#     +-- 2G1 (alias 2B1) (mark ^)

A long discussion has been carried out here:
http://www.sudoku.org.uk/SudokuThread.asp?fid=4&sid=10069&p1=1&p2=10
It concerns the so-called extreme #71 grid

Here is my solution, reached in 4 nodes:
http://img37.picoodle.com/img/img37/4/2/17/f_extreme71m_974957e.jpg

Code:

2 . .|1 . 9|4 . .
. 8 .|. . 3|. . .
. . 7|. 8 .|. . .
-----+-----+-----
9 2 .|5 . .|. . .
6 . .|. . .|. . 1
. . .|. . 4|. 2 5
-----+-----+-----
. . .|. 2 .|8 . .
. . .|9 . .|. 7 .
. . 8|4 . 1|. . 3

#
#    ----- 1st Tree -----
#    5G6 (alias 5C6) [contradiction]
#    5C6 definitive  (circled)
#
#    ----- 2nd Tree -----
#    7G6 (alias 7D6)
#     |
#     +-- 3H5 (alias 3E5) (mark ^) [contradiction]
#     +-- 3E5 (mark o)
#          |
#          +-- 3C7 (alias 3D7) (mark ~) [contradiction]
#          +-- 3D7 (squared mark)
#               |
#               +-- 3F3 (alias 3A3) (mark //) [contradiction]
#               +-- 3A3 which solves the puzzle

Code:

#    5C6 definitive  (circled)

where is the description of how you decided on { 5G6 5C6 } as the first move?

Simply in column 6, after logic moves:
    C6 -> 56
    D6 -> 67
    G6 -> 567

At the failure of 5G6, 5C6 becomes valid and it has been circled in order to be distinguished from logical numbers (top-left angles).

Grid #12 from Glenn Fowler's huge database (sudoku section): FNBTXYW-1-constrained puzzle sample (100000)
URL: http://www.research.att.com/~gsf/

Code:

#
# 81-digit line #12
#
1......89..67....3....2....2......983..81..6.....4..17..8....3.6.15...4.94.6.....
#

My solution is shown below and takes only one shot: 1C4 (alias 1G4), being in the same column 4: C4->19; F4->29; G4->129

Frank, if my roof leaks, if my car won't start, if my back hurts so much I cannot stand up.... I would never get a "guessor". If you would, well, goodbye.

The proposed puzzle is typical for understanding the main difference beetween brute force method and guess, as applied by me!
In fact, the choice of the initial value has the same importance of what happens in numerical analysis on dealing with Newton-Raphson iteration, in order to find the convergence to one root.
Probably, this grid is evaluated (through computer programs) as diabolic, nightmare, insane. Really, the appropriate choice of the initial guess goes to the target in only one shot, as shown here:
http://img26.picoodle.com/img/img26/4/2/22/f_2333215fm_88b6160.jpg

Code:

# Source: Puzzle Designer of `The Su Doku Assistant`(v2.08)
#         seed 2333, 21 starting cells, 5 grade of difficulty
#         symmetric grid (max.grade of diff.=6)

. . .|7 6 4|. . .
. 2 .|. 9 .|. 4 .
. . .|. . .|. . .
-----+-----+-----
. . 8|. . .|7 . .
. 4 7|. 2 .|6 5 .
. . 1|. . .|8 . .
-----+-----+-----
. . .|. . .|. . .
. 3 .|. 5 .|. 2 .
. . .|6 7 1|. . .

#         8G5 (alias 8C5) solves the puzzle
