Hi Danny. Just hold F11 down until you reach the "No More Hints" message Smile.
Anyhow, I'm not currently persuaded to add this feature you're requesting. Sorry.

Angus

Your website is showing a version 4.2n of 9 April 2007 as the latest version of SS. The version check function on my version 4.2m returns the statement that this is the latest version. Can you clarify?

Many thanks

I got started on Sudoku using Nintendo Brain Age DS. I'm hooked and looking for an equivalent program on my PC. Simple Sudoku seems to be it except I can't get it to allow me to notate each grid. It only has a mode that shows me all candidates which is kind of cheating IMO.

Is it possible to get the same interface as Brain Age with this program?

Thanks!

This is a FYI to new users of Simple Sudoku.

Some of the puzzles provided with SS have the same solution. This is okay as long as the puzzles are different. However, some puzzles are identical -- mensa 4,6,7,12 for example. Come to think of it, maybe this is part of the test for mensa solvers.

Finally, the SS solving order for some puzzles does not always match the name on the puzzle. Pat in the Programmers Forums recently pointed out that SS used Multiple Colors on Hidden_Quads.ss -- followed shortly by a Hidden Triple.

Just to clarify what's been said here ...
while SS does make entirely random puzzles every time a new puzzle is generated, I've also bundled with SS quite a number of interesting pre-made puzzles as part of the distribution. This is so users can hone their skills with particular puzzles requiring specific solving strategies. A very small number of these bundled pre-made puzzles (with particularly interesting properties) were generated by others and were discussed at length in these forums. This might account for the apparent lack of randomness in a very few of these puzzles.

yes, and ronk kindly provided the link to angusj (2006.Mar.31)
the Simple Sodoku order of applying the solution-techniques
    must've changed in late-2005 or early-2006

Hi Angus, if you tick Block Invalid Moves and copy sudoku hints below to the software, it can not lead to the solution I want.

Sudoku hints:
*-----------*
|123|456|789|
|45.|.8.|...|
|7..|..3|..6|
|---+---+---|
|2..|5..|8..|
|56.|...|.3.|
|8.7|..1|...|
|---+---+---|
|3..|6..|...|
|6..|.7.|.1.|
|9.8|...|..5|
*-----------*

The solution intended:

*-----------*
|123|456|789|
|456|789|123|
|789|123|456|
|---+---+---|
|231|564|897|
|564|897|231|
|897|231|564|
|---+---+---|
|312|645|978|
|645|978|312|
|978|312|645|
*-----------*

Please fix this when you find time. Best wishes.

Hi Addlan.
Perhaps when you pasted your Sudoku into Simple Sudoku you didn't notice the messasge in the statusbar that states it's an invalid Sudoku with 73 solutions. Sad

This may be a repeat of some earlier message in this thread. Heck, I may have mentioned it and then forgot about it. Anyway, there is a flaw in SS where it will sometimes accepts an erroneous PM. Here is an example.

Code:
 *--------------------------------------------------------------------*
 | 139    4      1239   | 5      6      8      | 279    17     1239   |
 | 8      239    6      | 23     1      7      | 2459   2359   23459  |
 | 7      123    5      | 23     4      9      | 6      8      123    |
 |----------------------+----------------------+----------------------|
 | 4      289    7      | 1      89     3      | 259    259    6      |
 | 139    5      139    | 6      2      4      | 79     17     8      |
 | 19     6      1289   | 7      89     5      | 3      4      129    |
 |----------------------+----------------------+----------------------|
 | 5      389    3489   | 89     7      6      | 1      239    2349   |
 | 2      89     89     | 4      3      1      | 589    6      59     |
 | 6      1389   13489  | 89     5      2      | 489    39     7      |

You'll only run into trouble if you've pasted an invalid puzzle into SS, or you've turned off "Block invalid moves". In your case, the givens are all valid but the candidates are not which suggests that "Block invalid moves" was disabled and a correct candidate has been removed.

Edit: In R8C2 candidate 7 has been incorrectly removed.
This is what your candidate grid should look like ...

Code:
 *--------------------------------------------------------------------*
 | 139    4      1239   | 5      6      8      | 279    17     1239   |
 | 8      239    6      | 23     1      7      | 2459   2359   23459  |
 | 7      123    5      | 23     4      9      | 6      8      123    |
 |----------------------+----------------------+----------------------|
 | 4      289    7      | 1      89     3      | 259    259    6      |
 | 139    5      139    | 6      2      4      | 79     17     8      |
 | 19     6      1289   | 7      89     5      | 3      4      129    |
 |----------------------+----------------------+----------------------|
 | 5      389    3489   | 89     7      6      | 1      239    2349   |
 | 2      789    89     | 4      3      1      | 589    6      59     |
 | 6      1389   13489  | 89     5      2      | 489    39     7      |
 *--------------------------------------------------------------------*

This is not my puzzle. It was posted elsewhere as a PM with the error in [r8c2]. I had "Block Invalid Moves" checked when loading the PM. Since SS loaded the PM w/o an error message, I just concentrated on the 2s mentioned by the original poster. It wasn't until later that solving the puzzle fell apart.

My own solver has a similar problem with this PM. It only validates that the naked singles lead to a unique solution. It fails to verify that the solution candidates are present in the remaining cells.

SS only checks givens (not candidates) when puzzles are pasted into it.

Hello.
would it be possible to expand this very lovely program to solve larger than 9*9 sudokus?

Is is possible to use the same solving techniques for ex 16*16 as a 9*9 sudoku??

Lastly.
Is there any sudoku that this program cannot solve soley by logic techniques?

I mean where we don't have to guess at any point??

Thanks

No, sorry to disappoint.

Most, if not all techniques used to solve standard 9x9 puzzles can be used to solve larger ones too.

Yes, there are many puzzles that defy currently known logical strategies (excluding trial and error), but all the puzzles that SS makes can be solved by the logical strategies described here - http://www.angusj.com/sudoku/hints.php .
