Despite the underlying current of "Capitalism is inherently evil", there is one point I'd like to make:

Distribution of software is hardly free: instead the producer (company) has to absorb 100% of the cost of production--with no corresponding income--until the software is ready for shipment. The goal is then to recoup the (already spent) cost of production over the anticipated sales volume; of course, if the software doesn't sell, the cost of production may not be recovered and the net transaction is a loss for the company. (There are a handful of examples of software companies declaring bankruptcy before ever shipping a product.) I would agree that the cost to duplicate, package, and distribute software are lesser than the cost to produce the software, but they're not "free" by any stretch of the imagination. It may not cost $500 to package each copy of Micro$oft Office, but how else are they going to pay the hundreds of programmers who worked on it for 2-3 years? (And let's not even open the Pandora's Box of software piracy, where the consumer gets the product at zero cost and eliminates any profit opportunity for the provider...)
Lastly, to declare the economic principles of supply & demand as "wrong" is rather ridiculous, as it has existed for as long as mankind has been huddled in caves trading bones to gnaw. (Find a shiny stone to trade or go hungry.) Recommending that people be paid comensurate with their labor and level of participation is like saying that every child should be given the opportunity to go to college: it sounds wonderful, but is not likely to happen in our lifetimes...

Agree. If you dont like commercial software, get linux, openoffice, firefox and so on. If you need software for shomething sit down and write it for your self. Whit buying software you are buying sevice and time spent for development. Who would spent millons dollars for development if he knew that he couldnt get any profit out of this?
what i do not agree whit software is licences. Which sais what you can can not do whit your software. Usually software is not actualy yours but all you get is licence for using. You cant reverese engeneer change and even sell it. I hate that i have to sign that "I AGREE" whit bunch of stuff what I think is ridiculus. If I buy ironing machine I do not need to sign any of this and have much more rights using it. |
