I'm writing a solver (I think the world needs another one) and my x-wing technique looks for pairs in each row then eleminates the number from the candidates on the relevant columns.
Am I right in thinking it should also do it the other way and check for pairs in columns then eliminate candiates in the relevant row? |

Indeed, you have to check the columns too.
