Pat has asked me to publish the current state here. In the moment i dont spend any (but cpu) time for sudoku, beside of posting my anger, that the players forum was turned off.
I have planned to write a summary of this search in some weeks - here or (hopefully) in the reestablished players forum.

Interesting. I suppose it's well known that these puzzles all have only 8 values among the givens (but how can I tell by searching   ). Number 66 (above) is getting close to being a diamond: 9.0/9.0/8.1.

You need a solver that is set to find all solutions to a candidate puzzle, but to stop at the second. You then present the puzzle to the solver as many times as there are clues, each time with a different clue missing. The puzzle is minimal if the solver finds two solutions each time. (The test can be stopped whenever only one solution is found as then the puzzle is clearly not minimal.)
A faster but more complicated method is to introduce an intermediate step in which, after finding a first solution, it is inspected to identify as many unavoidable sets as possible (say, all 4- and 6-sets) and, as each set is identified, to check that it is covered by at least one clue. If any set is uncovered the puzzle without that clue has multiple solutions.

I apply the first rule given by mike, but on top of it, at generation time, you can stop immediately if in the process one of the clues is inferred by the others.

Something I've always wondered but never took the time to check. Maybe you have the answer handy.
Does gsf's solver find minimal puzzles for the solution, or does it find the minimal combination of clues from those supplied for the puzzle?
I'm interested in the second case because I post puzzles elsewhere that must meet certain difficulty constraints. Sometimes more clues can be removed from my puzzle, but it changes the difficulty level or ruins the symmetry of the clues. Still, I'd like an easy way to know if my clues are even close to minimal.

You have some choices, such as to require symmetry preservation. |

The latter. I think there's a way to specify "symmetrically minimal" puzzles too, but I've lost the formula for that. |

Now i have uploaded my sets of minimal 37's and 38's to these links. Please dont mind the banners, the button for the download is at the bottom of the page. Note, that the links will die a month after the last download.

Three 39's were added in the first post (that does not mean that i find them that fast, they just come eratically).
Indeed all known 39's have a missing digit (though my method would not exclude others).
Also most of them have an empty row/column (84.8 % - 67 out of 79 - all i have found including an isomorph of one of Havards 39's), 31 (39.2%) have both an empty row and column.
For the 38's:
1.5 % have all 9 digits given, 74.5% an empty row/column, 28.4% both an empty row and column. |

i downloaded both files (Apr.25)
also, posted the 38s ( as before ) on my Multiply
they seem quite happy to host filesmax 5 attachments per post,
max 20 MB each file --
so the file of 37s is too large |
