AngusJ, since SLK001 skipped over your question about the assignment in [r9c9], maybe I can shed some light. Here's the PM when he performed the assignment. Instead of using the <47> pair in [b9] to perform [r9c9]<>4, it appears that he took a shortcut and just performed an assignment in that cell. I do this all the time as well.
Code: |
*-----------------------------------------------------------------------------*
| 24689 468 3 | 689 1 689 | 7 5 248 |
| 124689 468 1249 | 6789 678 5 | 146 3 1248 |
| 7 68 5 | 3 4 2 | 16 9 18 |
|-------------------------+-------------------------+-------------------------|
| 249 1 8 | 5 27 479 | 49 6 3 |
| 24569 3 249 | 689 268 4689 | 459 1 7 |
| 4569 7 49 | 1 6 3 | 2 8 459 |
|-------------------------+-------------------------+-------------------------|
| 3 9 7 | 4 5 1 | 8 2 6 |
| 148 2 14 | 678 3 678 | 1459 47 1459 |
| 148 5 6 | 2 9 78 | 3 47 14 |
*-----------------------------------------------------------------------------*

Yes, thanks, and perfectly logical.
As to the suggestion by SLK001 that the coloring may be affecting candidate exclusions, again I can't duplicate this. It's a mystery, especially as no one else is reporting similar problems (and SS has been downloaded literally millions of times). All I can suggest at this stage SLK001 is that you try a different PC. |

It appears that your "Selected" color is white, which is rather hard to spot. It also appears that [edit: most of] the '9' cells were selected. Therefore, you were trying to exclude digit 9 from ALL those cells ... which is obviously "Invalid."
Recommend you go back to the default yellow color for "Selected."

Yes, that's a good observation. It's possible that this "error" is arising when other cells (apart from the focused cell) are selected inadvertently because you can't readily see which cells have selection. Hence trying to delete a specific candidate from one of those inadvertently selected cells may be what's tripping the error message. |

I'll try resetting the colors to the defaults and see if there really are any other cells selected. Even though the "Selected" color is white, you can still see the highlighted cells.
As for your ? about the "1" in R9C9, I often just scan for "low-hanging" fruit, like that cell and just enter the value (like daj95376 suggests). |

Also, when you select a single cell (to highlight, for instance), it steals focus from all others. So the possibility of other cells being highlighted are nil. |

True ... but take a really close look at your figure ... at the white bordering around the cells with candidate 9. Then ask yourself while ignoring the [edit: marker (highlighting)] colors ... "why does r2c4 have different white bordering than the others?"

It might be because it is the only "unsolved" cell that is not highlighted. To get ALL the selected cells to be highlighted at the same time, you need to hold down the CTRL key.
Also, the resloution of the image may not be good enough to be able to grab any useful additional info. |

The resolution is good enough to be very sure the software "thought" all cells with candidate 9 (except r2c4) were selected. If you didn't select them, then the BUG did.

Having only one "unsolved" cell should be easy enough to replicate. In any case, a yellow "Selected" color should make the situation easier to spot than white. |

Yes, well spotted again!

Definitely.
nb: Holding the Shift key or the Ctrl key down while clicking other cells will allow multiple cells to be selected. |

Okay, you guys were correct. I HAD been highlighting other cells (specifically, the "color" cells) during the process. What I would do, is hold down the CTRL key while I highlighted the colors - blue, green, blue, green, etc., then, while still holding down the CTRL key, also highlight the cell that I wanted to operate on. Releasing the CTRL key and pressing the ALT-# key would result in an error, because the "colors" were also highlighted.
I changed the selected color to white, because I found it distracting when I changed the "numbers" focus. For instance, while I have highlighted all the "1"s, all operations that I do here are fine with the yellow color. However, when I switch to the "2"s, the highlighted cell is still yellow. To see if there are any "2"s there, I have to either look into the highlighted cell, itself, or move the focus to a solved cell (which doesn't highlight). It's trivial, I know, but that was my reason.
Maybe an option that resets the "selected" cell color when the puzzle focus is changed.
Also, is there a reason that cells don't automatically "solve" when there is a single number in them? For instance, if I have a cell that has a "2 5" in it, and I remove the "2", technically, the cell is solved with a "5", but it DOESN'T solve until I either click a "5" or double click on the cell. |
