SUDOKU CHALLENGE
*******************************************
For part of my degree i have been developing su doku software. One of these is designed to produce results on the playability of the game depending on the input set used.
Could anyone and everyone please have a go at the experiment, it doesnt take that long and its fun to do.

Thanks for your time.

Hi,
I have removed the extra post you made in this forum. There is no need to post anything twice in a forum, no matter how important you think it is.
Secondly, taking the challenge on your website fails because I need to logon. I have no user ID nor a password for your site. This is something thay you may want to fix.

When I was at university, we had to work, not play games!
You kids have it easy these days. When I was at university you had to submit your program to the computing department who then turned it into a stack of puched cards several days later. They fed them into the machine and about a week later you'd get a report that said "Syntax error!" Doh! |

Sorry the game previously didnt work becasue of a university firewall. It is now hosted elsewhere and will work. The url is:

Please have a go its really fun and doesnt take too long.

Interesting. I'm trying the same approach on kids. For now, my goal is to help those challenged by digits to recognized their learning styles.
I'll play your challenge tomorrow when I'm at the unibersity. |

I have seen puzzles with symbols and the like before, I find them much more difficult to work on than puzzles with digits. For one thing I can't cycle through a list of symbols in my head as easily as I can numbers. Letters aren't so bad, since I can cycle through them fairly quickly but I still find numbers easier. With symbols you can't do any marking up very easily (though on these puzzles it wasn't necessary anyway) and symbols take more brain processing to identify than numbers do. |

I had the same problem. At some point I was mentally replacing the symbols by the number of mouse clicks needed to select it.
Partly, the problem is in the cycling itself. Any method other than simply typing a number (or letter) distracts me from the actual solving. Some Flash programs that use ring selectors also slow down my solving speed.

Its really interesting the kinds of feedback i am getting from people. The results suggest that using shapes is much harder than the others. Using colours however gets mixed reports, like you they find it hard to enter values as there is no obvious sequence to the values, however some people find it easier because they can spot patterns more easily.
I am about to put up a solvers assistant tool thats pretty cool and helps you answer the puzzles, will keep you all posted.

You used an example with only 6 colours. When the number of colours increases, it will be more difficult to distinguish them.
It surprised me that you used a mixed set of symbols and puzzle sizes. For accurate comparisons, you should only change a single variable, not multiple at the same time.
Not that I am a scientist...

Well the reasons why i have differing input sets and grid sizes is to try and look into whether there is a relationship between the two different variables. TO see how the grid size and input style effect the time to complete a puzzle. It will also allow me to generate mathmatic equations for predicting the average time to complete puzzles with much larger grids.

OK guys you have to check out this new experiment. The program is a solvers assistant to help you complete a puzzle.
Its really interesting so why dont you just give it a try.

Thanks for taking part its being really helpfull.
Cheers
