Hey I am relatively new to sudoku, Total Sudoku is actually my first book, but I do 5 a day including some fiendish. I have been working on this one though, a fiendish, forever and I need some help. I have read about certain advanced methods, but i cant find any in the puzzle. I was hoping someone could help me out and maybe show me how to finish this thing. I really don't want the answer, I want to learn how to get to the answer.
The original start for the puzzle is:
.86..2...
1.7964...
..4......
7.98..5..
.4.....6.
..8..67.9
......9..
...1793.6
......9..
...1793.6
...4..15.

It is page 5 in the Total Sudoku book by Mepham
I have gotten this far:
.86..24..
1.7964...
..4.8.6..
7698..5..
.4..9..6.
.18..67.9
.716..9..
...1793.6
693428157
If anyone could help that would be great thanks!

Hi, welcome to this forum.

Most of our members are programmers, so it's nice to have a player on board. Reminds us that there are actually people using our programs.

As for your Sudoku:

You did not specify a candidate list, so I assumed this would be it:

Code:
.------------------.------------------.------------------.
| 359   8     6    | 357   135   2    | 4     1379  135  |
| 1     235   7    | 9     6     4    | 28    238   2358 |
| 2359  235   4    | 357   8     1357 | 6     12379 1235 |
:------------------+------------------+------------------:
| 7     6     9    | 8     134   13   | 5     1234  1234 |
| 235   4     25   | 2357  9     1357 | 28    6     1238 |
| 235   1     8    | 235   345   6    | 7     234   9    |
:------------------+------------------+------------------:
| 2458  7     1    | 6     35    35   | 9     248   248  |
| 2458  25    25   | 1     7     9    | 3     248   6    |
| 6     9     3    | 4     2     8    | 1     5     7    |
'------------------'------------------'------------------'

Notice the candidates for digit 2 in row 4. They're all locked in the last box of that row. Since one of these two cells must contain digit 2, the remaining three candidates in that box are disabled.

That allows you to place an 8 and a 2 in column 7.

Row 8 has 2 cells with candidates 2 and 5. Two cells with two candidates, that seems pretty crammed to me. No other cells in that row, and in that box allow a 2 or a 5.

The most difficult thing you will encounter in this sudoku is a hidden pair.

Check some of the solving guides mentioned in the first topic. They will help you master these techniques.

Ruud.
