Hi
I'm posting this in here as the "Setting Sudoku" forum gets next to no traffic.
I'm using a templating system to try and generate puzzles. I generate solved boards, and I have a set of masks that I apply to the solved boards to generate puzzles. I then run these puzzles through my solver to give it a rating, and determine if there is a unique solution.
The problem I have is that I end up throwing away 99% of all the generated puzzles because they have multiple solutions, or they're are too simple to solve using only the most basic logic.
What is the best (not simplest) way to generate puzzles? What methods do you guys use? What heuristics can be applied to a non-unique puzzle to make it unique? Are there methods to force puzzles to have specific difficulties? Does anyone know how it's done at menneske.no/sudoku/eng? There's loads there and I'd love to know how they were put together...

Many members have already answered this question here.
I have experimented with different methods, but the one I described in the mentioned topic still works best for me. |
